ICYMI: Victoria was originally played by Rachelle Lefevre in the series’ first two installments ( Twilight and New Moon), but after Lefevre dropped out of Eclipse due to scheduling conflicts, Howard took over. To celebrate the series’ release on Netflix, the actor took to Instagram to share a fun throwback story that proves she’s definitely Team Edward. But Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays her in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, certainly doesn’t share this opinion. PG-13, but an intense one: There are several violent scenes with decapitations, neck-breakings, dismemberments, as well as some sexual themes. As any devoted Twilight fan knows, the villainous vampire Victoria isn’t a huge fan of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Kendrick does get one clever scene, though, giving the high-school graduation speech in which she urges classmates to not make any hard-and-fast choices with their future, but to try different paths, to be willing to make mistakes.īella, though? Her mind's made up already. And neither does the wonderful Anna Kendrick of "Up in the Air," as one of Bella's few friends who isn't a vampire or a shape-shifter. Jacksonville's Ashley Greene doesn't get as much screen time this time around as vampire Alice Cullen. He seems like a guy she might seriously miss if she ever gets her wish to be undead. He hits every note perfectly his birds-and-the-bees talk with Bella is the movie's comic highlight. Notable once more is Billy Burke, as Bella's dad. And there are again some good characters on the periphery. It helps too that the lead actors have fine chemistry that's heated up over the three movies. The story, wisely, fills the time just fine with compelling back stories for the wolf pack and for two of the Cullens, Jasper and Rosalie. Slade and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg keep "Eclipse" humming along at a fine pace, even though there's not a lot of action going on: Most of the film is Bella agonizing over whom to choose, while waiting for the newborn army to arrive. Parents might like him, but some of the younger ones could think he's getting to be a bit of a bore. It's hard for courtly Edward, who will not have sex or any bloodsucking with Bella until they're married, to compete. But of course he's shirtless, warm and seems fated to be the romantic loser. The hero of Team Jacob, judging by the shrieks of those in attendance with me, has won the battle of the audience. Of course the bulk of the story consists of vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) and shape-shifting wolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) declaring their eternal love for Bella (Kristen Stewart), who's set a date to go undead, shortly after graduation from Forks High. To do so, she recruits an army of newborns - undisciplined, hungry new vampires - who terrorize Seattle before they head west to Forks to finish off Bella. The plot concerns redhaired vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard), out for revenge on Edward. Helped by the best special-effects so far in the "Twilight" world, he brings some welcome horror sensibilities to the saga, letting us know right from the start - a young man, stalked on a rainy Seattle night - that this vampire movie's going to have blood coursing through it. Jacob: She has other reasons, which we'll let her explain.īlog: See all three "Twilight" movies today at these theatersĭirector David Slade ("Hard Candy," "30 Days of Night") does a fine job adapting Stephenie Meyer's third novel in the series (the fourth, "Breaking Dawn," will be split into two parts, of which fans are already well aware). The film - probably the best in the series, and a definite rebound from the bland second one - will make its intended audience swoon at the romantic triangle in which Bella finds herself.Īnd in a nicely written epilogue after the big action showdown, it makes it clear that her decision isn't just about Edward vs. "Eclipse" gets that, grounding its fantastical story in the superheated realities of mundane teenage life. A typical teenager, other than the vampires and werewolves she hangs with. She heeds only her urgent, troubled heart, while she still has one. All through "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," vampires, shape-shifting werewolves and at least one actual human being hammer this point home to Bella Swan, she who would like to become one of the undead, and quickly: Don't make any rash decisions.
